A quote that resonates with me and was my inspiration when I started my journey as a content writer. Why should you read my post on content writing tips when there are thousands of posts that offer the same advice. 

The reason is simple. These are tried and tested tips from me-a beginner who has achieved the following –

  • almost 30 articles on my website along with creating posts for LinkedIn, Medium, Pinterest and client websites.
  •  writing more than 50,000 words. Not bad for a beginner, right?
  • A website with 1000+ page views.
  • Ranking on page 1  of Google for at least one keyword.

And it wasn’t easy because I started my journey as a content writer as a  small experiment.

I decided I will not let anyone from my family, friends, acquaintances, relatives, co-workers know that I have a blog where I write. 

Till date nobody knows.

I will generate traffic, leads and visitors organically and through channels that no one I knew was a part of.

And that makes it a big deal and I am proud of my journey so far.

So if I can do it, so can you.

Content writing can seem like a daunting task when you’re just starting out and can be a tricky thing for beginners to get it right.

  1. Start with a catchy headline – Your headline is the first thing people will see, so make sure it’s attention-grabbing and relevant to your article. 
  2. Write in a clear, concise style – Keep your sentences short and to the point to keep your readers engaged. 
  3. Use strong verbs – Use active voice and powerful verbs to add punch to your writing. 
  4. Engage your readers – Use storytelling and other strategies to make your readers feel invested in what you’re writing.
  5. Edit, edit, edit! – Always revise and proofread your work before hitting publish.

Let us talk a little more about each content writing tip mentioned in the above list-

1.Start with a catchy headline – 

Your headline is the first thing people will see, so make sure it’s attention-grabbing and relevant to your article.

For an introduction, set the tone early on with a catchy headline.

This will heighten people’s interest in reading your article.

You could also draw inspiration from the headlines of  articles on  similar topics, if you’re not sure what to write.

2. Write in a clear, concise style

 A brief sentence is one way to keep your reader engaged.

In your writing, you’ll want to include only the most essential information.

Put your keywords in the main body of your content, and make sure to use active voice.

What can be said in one word do not use two there. It loses the punch.

It will help your writing to come across as more authoritative and effective.

4.Engage your readers– 

The key to writing engaging content is to get your readers involved.

This can be done through storytelling and other strategies.

For example, include a brief backstory about a personal experience that relates to the topic of your article. This will make your readers feel like they’re learning something new, while also engaging them.

You have to discover what works for your audience.

5.Edit , improve and eliminate fluff-.

 This is a simple tip, but it’s an important one.

The reason for that is, when you’re writing content, you generally want to provide your readers with the most useful information on the chosen topic.

Hence, make sure that your writing is clear, concise, and compelling by editing, and revising. 

Let me share with you my writing flaw- I would use the word “very” quite often in my writing. E.g., very important, very nice, very interesting. 

One day I came across this quote in one of the articles I was reading: “Substitute ‘damn’ every time you’re inclined to write ‘very;’ your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.” –Mark Twain

And then, I consciously tried to eliminate the word very from my writing vocabulary and guess what it made no difference in terms of engagement and effectiveness. Hence editing and proofreading is necessary to remove fillers.

There are many strategies you can use to improve your content. 

For example, you could: 

  • make sure the information you’re sharing is relevant to your readers 
  • use a brief intro that will grab readers’ attention and take your readers along with you
  • ask questions to draw your readers in
  • include a brief backstory that relates to your content
  • use a listicle when you want to share tips

As you can see, there are numerous ways to improve your content. The key is to find what works for your audience. Just make sure to keep things interesting and to the point.

When you’re done writing your content, to polish your article you need to edit, edit, and edit some more. This will help you to catch any grammar and spelling errors, eliminate fluff, while improving the flow of your writing. Once you’re satisfied with your edits, you can share it with your audience.
